A journey to learn about the land through food

Through food craft, Eva Gunnare introduces us to ways of seeing to understand lands. She invites us to see beyond the trees, to get to know traditional food practices and to listen and learn with herbs and berries.

Historically, there has existed a knowledge about the lands where an interplay and respectful relationship between humans and nature was marked by reciprocity of giving and taking. In many places, this is a knowledge that has been lost. Eva Gunnare studied one year under the great Sami chef and educator Greta Huuva at Sámij åhpadusguovdásj (The Sami Education Centre). Here she learned how to listen and learn with the land. During this food journey, Eva Gunnare invites us to see beyond the trees, to get to know traditional food practices, to listen and learn with herbs and berries. Through food craft, Eva Gunnare introduces us to ways of seeing to understand lands.

Luleå Biennial 2022 commissioned filmmaker Karl-Oskar Gustafsson to capture and reflect on the exhibition and the researcher’s process.
