Urgent Pedagogies: Decolonial learning

Welcome to a learning moment around issues of decolonial pedagogies, hosted by Urgent Pedagogies for Entity of Decolonization, the third annual gathering at Borgo Rizza, Carlentini, Sicily.

In this seminar and workshop the Urgent Pedagogies project and platform will be presented, followed by presentations focusing on pedagogical practice, concepts, methods and experiences of achievements, and failures.

Presentation by Magnus Ericson, Amalia Katopodis and Pelin Tan. Workshop with special guests, including Luigi Coppola, Emilio Distretti, Sandi Hilal, Ana Mariá Leon, Matteo Lucchetti, Alessandro Petti, Judith Wielander, moderation by Chiara Siravo.

 

Curator and co-founder of the project Magnus Ericson will introduce and outline the project, its objectives, approaches and achievements, presenting the online archive and publishing platform. He will discuss the Urgent Pedagogies’ role in archiving pedagogical experience from a diversity of contexts and geographies, how it has contributed to acknowledging and re-defining artistic practice, and the importance of forming alliances of solidarity.

Architect and educator Amalia Katopodis will discuss the crucial role of transformative learning processes within architectural education by sharing the live project work conducted in Izmir, Turkey while working closely together with students, academics, researchers, NGOs, local partners, and communities to design and build a series of small social and educational spaces on the rooftop of TIAFI Community Centre in 2023.

Sociologist, art historian, educator and co-founder of the project Pelin Tan will discuss pedagogical practices and related institutional forms in the struggles of field engagement that are formed in relation to climate justice, forced migration, structural violence, prevention of transhumance, and rights of indigenous communities. She will present two pedagogical projects in the Southeast of Turkey where transhumance nomads and vulnerable communities are under political oppression by infrastructure projects that lead to dispossession and loss of indigenous culture. She will introduce the question of engagement and ways of resistance as a pedagogical method.

The event is presented as part of Entity of Decolonization, the third annual gathering at Borgo Rizza, Carlentini, Sicily. This year the hosting institutions are the Municipality of Carlentini, the DAAS program at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, The School of Architecture at the Royal College of Art in London, IASPIS the Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s International Programme for Visual and Applied Arts, DAAR, Decolonizing Architecture Art Research, and Museo delle Civiltà in Rome.

Participants
Magnus Ericson

is a Stockholm-based curator and educator working across design, architecture, urbanism, and art. He is currently Head of IASPIS Applied Arts, leading the program related to design, crafts, architecture, and spatial and urban practice. From 2014 to 2018 he developed and led a number of postgraduate courses on socially engaged critical practice at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Between 2009 and 2014, he was a Senior Advisor/Curator for the design-related program at Arkdes, Sweden’s National Center for Architecture and Design, in Stockholm. From 2007 to 2009 he was assigned as a Project Manager at IASPIS to pursue and develop activities within the fields of design, crafts, and architecture. Together with Pelin Tan, he is the curator of Urgent Pedagogies.

Amalia Katopodis

is an architect and educator, currently based at Umeå School of Architecture in Sweden where she is Deputy Head and Program Director responsible for education. Her research lies in the field of urgent architectural pedagogies stretching beyond conventional learning environments with a focus on contexts of social injustice. She has led several socially engaged design studios with an emphasis on situated practice and in recent years the studio titled: Global Challenges, addressing pressing social issues including displacement and migration.  She was part of the core academic team to start up the AMC School of Architecture in Athens, Greece in close collaboration with the University of East London and was mainly responsible for the international accreditation of the BA Programme in 2014. She is co-founder of the small practice i.architects and of the Office of Displaced Designers.

Chiara Siravo

is a curator, historian, and researcher. She is an Archival Curator at the Open Resource Center at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) and is part of the curatorial department at MACRO—Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome. Between 2017 and 2020, Chiara built and curated the I-DEA exhibition project for Matera European Capital of Culture 2019 together with the project’s director, Joseph Grima. Working with artists, theorists, and architects, the exhibition project was focused on mapping the institutional and grassroots archives present in the region of Basilicata. She holds a degree in history from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and an MA in the history of material culture and design from the Royal College of Art and Victoria & Albert Museum.

Pelin Tan

is a sociologist/art historian/film director based in Mardin and is currently a Professor in the Fine Arts Faculty of Batman University, Turkey. She is the 6th recipient of the Keith Haring Art and Activism and a Fellow of Bard College of the Human Rights Program and Center for Curatorial Studies, NY, 2019-2020. Pelin Tan is a Senior Fellow of the Center for Arts, Design and Social Research, Boston; and a researcher on Space and Anthropocene at the Architecture Faculty, University of Thessaly, Volos (2021-2026). She is a lead author of the Urban Society report edited by Saskia Sassen & Edgar Pieterse (Cambridge Univ.Press, 2018). Along with Anton Vidokle, Tan got the Sharjah Film Platform grant for their current short film “Gılgamesh: Who Saw the Deep” (2022). Together with Magnus Ericson, she is the curator of Urgent Pedagogies.
